Make Wielder Death less punishing or allow retreat.
Currently, in a 1v1 game, losing your hero is quite daunting and leaves the enemy to snowball against you - meaning that a fight where both players have 5-10 items can be the fight that determines the match. Not only can you lose your primary hero (and it costs way more than in HoMM games), but you also lose all your equipment which can be used by the enemy.
I suggest to either allow the enemy to only take the items that are currently equipped or give the wielders the ability to retreat and not lose their weapons (but still their army).

MecharionThere is retreat - but only if you are not the attacker. And thats fine. I hate how everyone and everything is retreating all the time in Homm3.

Dino MergedWith specific regards to the Skirmish mode, which is where I've spent most of my time, a lot of games come down to the aftermath of a single decisive battle.
* The winner takes all the items of the loser.
* The loser cannot reliably recouperate the lost units (strangled by either gold, or available units, or both).
This leads to entire games being decided functionally by one big battle. Once you've taken out your oppositions biggest doomstack, you are more or less unstoppable, as their lesser Wielders cannot stop or slow you down at all.
A respawned Wielder who takes a few troops from their base is immediently killed a second time by the same doomstack.
Once you remove the enemies doom stack, you can easily take their settlements, of which there is no coming back.
Given the stakes of that singular battle, you are incentvised to only strike when you have a guaranteed victory. -

CidIn Heroes 3 there were two options to escape battles: retreat, and surrender. Surrender cost an amount of gold that scaled based on your remaining units. If you pay the cost and surrender, your hero was immediately available to hire again for the standard new-hero cost, and retained their items and units. Retreat was the same except it cost nothing and you lost all units. That system seemed to work well. There were even items that decreased the cost of surrender.
