Combat - Add "Wait" and "Defend" to unit combat options
Still getting the hang of this game but I dislike the fact that I have only move/attack as the only combat actions allowed. 'Wait' is needed so that a unit can skip its turn until all other units have had their turn. It is particularly useful to ranged units as enemy units can move, during the unit turn progression, nearer the ranged unit making the ranged unit more effective.
'Defend' is needed because it should grant a defensive bonus (+5 defense ?). Sometimes I don't want to move and attacking from high ground with a weak unit would get the unit killed and remove the benefit of hindering enemy movement. Better that weak unit take as many attackers out defending to the last.

Ozymandias'Wait' and 'Defend' is already part of the game. Some units have def like swordsman and some have wait like dragons or fay. Some range units have analogue of those. Toxicologists can buff their next attack. Archers and Dragons will attack first unit to come in range. I dont think game needs wait and def for all units. Stop turning this game in HoMM)))))

Grumpy MergedI should never be penalized for being faster. Delaying a unit's turn should be a baseline thing that every unit can do not just specific units.

OwlaKazamAn improvement/clarification to the 'wait' ability would also improve those units and the ability. Right now it says 'costs one m.p. and postpones turn.' But in reality, it requires the full action to postpone (maybe the unit has one less movement when later activating, idk). But, it is worded like you can move half the distance (and as long as you have one m.p.) then you can postpone your attack and the rest of your movement points, which I think would be better. You could move them to highground, or away from a cluster of friendly units, or in defence of a ranged unit, and then postpone the rest of the action.
I don't think it needs to be an ability for every (melee) unit. The current troop abilities, generation of essence, and movement/initiative altering spells gives players options to close odd gaps. -

Richard JerniganSimply allowing a unit to wait a bit should be a basic capability of every unit. Or, perhaps, it could be a tactical skill that a wielder could earn?

PatrykDevs can add a setting that changes the availability of the Defense and Wait actions for all units (for eg. startegic mode/adventure mode). Win-win scenario.

DieHeartThis! It would add to the tactical depth. Now you're just kinda locked in order and your heavy armored troops cant really focus on defending.

Cody MergedIt feels weird that wait is an ability that only one super fast unit can use (arguably one of the units that needs it the least). Wait should be an inherent command to allow the player more tactical options.

Song of Conquest PlayerThe most significant tactical situation where this is most necessary, is when taking the ability that increases initiative of units.
The increased initiative has a negative impact in situations where it boosts turn order of units over enemy units that the player actually wants to move first.
In almost all cases it has to do with finessing the tactics to ranged units (including the Pikeneer) and proximal unit abilities like mines and spikes.
Such as when wanting spikes already placed to be destroyed so that new ones can be placed in the same location,
and, of course, ranged units waiting for enemy units to come into closer ranged for the increased damage due to proximity.
Or in the case of the cannons - in range at all.
I think its clear what faction I play most. -
